This week is Diabetes week! We managed to catch up with MORPh Director and Clinical Lead, Dr Duncan Jenkins for his view on the contribution Pharmacists have in the management of Diabetes.

“Pharmacists have a huge contribution to make in the management of Diabetes. As well as offering advice on the practical aspects of medicines use and self-care, we can help patients to manage the three key risk factors – blood sugar, blood pressure and hypertension. This includes individualising patient care through an evidence-based approach to medication review monitoring and prescribing.

“At a practice or locality level, we can play a valuable role in developing local guidelines and conducting clinical audits. In terms of prevention, all members of the primary care team can play a role in sign-posting and advising those with a high risk of developing diabetes.”

During these sessions we will look at what’s new in diabetes, blood glucose monitoring including freestyle libre, supporting self-care in diabetes and management of pre-diabetes in the GP Practice.
