MORPh Training release more Dermatology Masterclass dates following the success of their launch in 2018

During the latter stages of 2018, MORPh Training’s clinical team spent time researching the increase in demand of Primary Care Pharmacists in Dermatology and carefully designing Masterclasses to complement this.

“During each of our study days, pharmacists are asked if there are any therapy areas they would like us to cover in the future” explained MORPh’s Clinical Lead, Dr Duncan Jenkins. “While analysing this, Dermatology was quickly becoming a reoccurring answer.”

In a report from the

, 650 consultant dermatologists work in the UK and each year over 54% of the population are affected by a skin disease, of which there are over 2,000 recognised. From this 54%, 23-33% have a disease which would benefit from medical care.

From this, it is recognised there needs to be support from not only trained nurses but also pharmacists. The King’s Fund

recommended there was a strong need to extend the role of pharmacists to help bridge the workforce gap and improve services.

They also determined that pharmacists “could be a valuable source of specialist expertise but there is a lack of clarity around their role as part of a consultant-led multi-disciplinary specialist dermatology service.”

Dr Duncan Jenkins concludes, “By devising a Dermatology Masterclass this would help lead pharmacists towards becoming more confident to lead their own clinics and extend their competencies. The day will take a detailed look into rosacea, acne, actinic keratosis and extending competencies in dermatology with a focus on next steps to independent prescribing and clinical supervision.”

In a further report by the PCDS, it was found that 10-15% of the primary care workload involves dermatology and that many common skin conditions are managed entirely within Practice. It is therefore key for Pharmacists to need to increase their training and become a vital member of the Practice team.

In November 2018, MORPh piloted the first Dermatology Masterclass in Manchester. Over 75% of pharmacists who attended felt more literate in the clinical area and more competent to make clinical decisions. “[I really enjoyed] the sharing of knowledge and practical tips and advice, learning diagnosis, visual pictures and differential diagnosis, excellent speakers.” – GP Pharmacist, Cheshire
